View Article  Read and precis gets a lot easier ...
Read and precis seems to be a bind, and difficult at first. However, after a short period of time it gets a lot easier. For example, when you first do a precis on magistrates you write down far too much. In a few weeks time you will write "M's" for magistrates.

Read and precis is an essential learning skill for University. Keep with it - after time it gets a lot easier and it makes lessons more fun (because when you arrive at the lesson you know the subject area).
View Article  Message for AS Law students ...

Please ensure that you prepare for your AS Law lessons by reading and precising BEFORE you reach the subject area in class.

Mrs Lindley will start her teaching (after Induction on Monday 15th Sept) with 'The Role of Magistrates' - you should read and precis Chapter 11 of 'OCR Law for AS' by Jacqueline Martin.

Mr Bunce will start his teaching (after Induction on Thursday 11th Sept) with 'The Role of a Jury' - you should read and precis Chapter 12 of 'OCR Law for AS' by Jacqueline Martin.

Your choice of AS and A Level subjects can have a significant impact on the course options available to you at University. It has even been reported (see attached) that students should ditch 'soft option' A-Levels.

View Article  Congratulations on your exam successes ...

Congratulations to all Laws Students on their exam successes.
Throughout the whole Department of Laws (i.e. for AS/A2, Law, AS/A2 Politics, and AS Citizenship) we had only 3 students who did not obtain a subject pass grade (this is significantly better than the national average). We had a 100% pass rate in AS Citizenship and AS/A2 Politics. What is more, there were an excellent number of A and B grades (too many to list) in all subject areas - with the vast majority of students improving upon their Target Minimum Grade (many significantly). Indeed, students met the 'high grade targets' in also Laws subject areas, excepting A2 Politics.

You should be proud of your efforts. Well done, Dr Jepson, Mrs Lindley, Mr Bunce, and Mr Scott.

Any AS students who have passed but wish to improve their Law or Politics grades (by re-sitting a Unit) need to contact Dr Jepson asap. It is our policy that such students need to attend AS classes while continuing on the A2 Course.

View Article  Sharia law explained ...

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has come under fierce criticism for a suggestion that adopting parts of Sharia law could help social cohesion in the UK. Whatever the merits, or otherwise, of such an argument - it seems that the suggestion may have stirred up Islamaphobic tendencies. Indeed, if the Sun Newspaper have anything to do with it, the public should "Bash the Bishop" and Sharia law will never become part of the A-Level Law syllabus.

That being said, this BBC article explains some of the basics of Sharia law.  Comments welcome.

View Article  Are AS/A2 Law exams now too easy? Send in your views ...
Some lecturers, including myself, have been arguing that the AS Law and A2 Criminal Law examinations have become too easy. Indeed, I would welcome examinations that enable bright students to shine. However, others argue that, at the current level, the examinations are attracting more students and producing excellent results.

One teacher recently wrote about A-Level Law:

1. It is fairly easy to predict the questions that come up for each topic therefore encouraging 'hot-house' preparation for students to come up with model answers without much thought
2. When marking as an examiner back in 2005, I found myself having to give fairly high grades to candidate work that was pretty average
3. This is the fourth change to the syllabus since 2000 with the result being the syllabus itself has been trimmed down and candidates have less examining time

Students - please send your comments to this blog.
