See this news story about the United Nations celebrating the new Disability Treaty.

I have had an email from Debbie King thanking you all for the support you have given over the Disability Campaign.

Over the past few days the United Nations have brought into force the Convention after the three countries needed ratified the convention. Thank you - please see the UN announcement.

Are you willing to help with an experiment? I am trying to see how quickly we can get the
UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities ratified. It has been open
for signature for one year and is NEARLY in force. You know from personal
experience how much discrimination can hurt.

According to the UN website, http://www.un.org/disabilities/
17 countries have ratified the UN Convention on the Rights and
Dignity of Persons with Disabilities : Bangladesh, Croatia, Cuba, El Salvador,
Gabon, Guinea, Hungary, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Namibia, Nicaragua, Panama,
Peru, San Marino, South Africa and Spain.

3 more countries are needed.... http://www.un.org/disabilities/documents/maps/enablemap.jpg

Please can you think laterally and ask your students (especially overseas)
to write to their political representatives and ask them to ratify the
UN Convention on the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities.
Please would you be kind enough to let me know what response you get?

We need 20 countries to ratify it + 30 days for it to come into force.
What is the VERY QUICKEST way we can make this happen? By lobbying
politicians in 3 countries to ratify.

If you can help it would be very much appreciated. Please help as disabled people get very fed up with being treated badly and a UN Convention  to complement the Conventions on sex, race etc will start to
shift public perception about disability.
